1-54; 3rd MARRAKECH EDITION OPENS.

By Nii B. Andrews.

The 3rd edition of the 1-54 Marrakech Fair opened with great success last night.

Twenty galleries from ten African and European countries are participating: South Africa, Germany, Belgium, Ivory Coast, Egypt, France, Italy, Morocco, United Kingdom and Senegal.

There are also ten galleries making their debut at the fair.

They include Afikaris (Paris, France), Afronova Gallery (Cape Town, South Africa), Galerie 127 (Marrakech, Morocco), and Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art (Cairo, Egypt).

More than sixty established and emerging artists will have their work on display.

Last night, an impressive satellite exhibition was opened in the architectural splendor of the Saadi Resort with the indefatigable and always charming art patron Elisabeth Bauchet-Bouhlal presiding.

It featured thirty great pieces by Mohamed Kacimi, Hamri, Drissi, Melehi, Glaoui, Mariam Abouzid Souali and others.

The exhibition titled “State of Emergency” is geared towards addressing Madame Bauchet-Bouhlal’s “feeling about a certain state of the world”. It is offered as a promise of “cultural resistance to challenge and make urgent changes in our practices and lifestyles”.

Always gracious and modest, she declined to indicate how many pieces in the magnificent exhibit came from her personal collection.

But the curated pieces resonated clearly with a certain poetry of expression which transmitted the concerns of the artists towards the upholding of human dignity not withstanding the challenges faced from many quarters.

Also yesterday in the Medina – at the Riad El Fenn another remarkable exhibition featured the latest work by Amina Agueznay and Hicham Benohoud, presented by Loft Art Gallery.

The next several days, up until February 22 promise to be exciting for art lovers, gallerists and collectors.

Apart from the main gallery exhibit at the La Mamounia, there is a huge eclectic program of events parallel to the fair, organized in collaboration with among others; the Museum of Contemporary African Art Al Maaden (MACAAL), the Yves Saint Laurent Museum Marrakech, the Montresso Foundation, the Comptoir des Mines and the French Institute in Marrakech.

Tonight, the upscale neighborhood of Gueliz, will be the site of multiple gallery shows involving over half a dozen galleries.

The boutiques and restaurants along Rue de Liberté will all also be turned into gallery spaces that will showcase the best of CAA to the world.
