AT SOTHEBY’S THIS WEEK.

The last CAA auction at Sotheby’s in London (on Tuesday, April 2) totalled an impressive USD3m.

Almost 50% of the total was due to the sale price of USD 1.4m for the Anatsui piece Zebra Crossing 2 (2007).

A total of 75 lots were sold. Seventy five percent of the buyers were from Africa.

CONGOLESE PALM: Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga. Sold for USD 106,031; a new record.

Eleven artists had new records set for the value of their work.

They included Senegalese artist Omar Ba; the Côte d’Ivoire-born painter Abdoulaye Diarrassouba; the late Moroccan master Hassan El Glaoui; and the late pioneering Nigerian photographer J.D. Okhai Ojeikere, whose record was broken twice in the same evening.

The Congolese artist Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga – featured previously on this site – also had his record broken.

His painting Congolese Palm sold for USD 106, 031; his previous record was  USD 92, 124 and that was set only last year.

With more African buyers coming into the secondary market, it is anticipated that the increase in the collector base will strengthen and solidify the CAA market.
