FEET DON’T FAIL ME NOW

One of the great advantages of living in Accra is the over 300 days of sunshine every year.

However, the accompanying humidity and soaring temperatures limit the wardrobe spectrum to tropical wools, cotton and linen.

But there is greater latitude for the shoe wardrobe.

Accra presents many fine opportunities to sport spectators, aka correspondents, if you have the insouciance to pull it off.

In a bygone era, the colonial British set favored a two-tone shoe with brown leather and contrasting beige canvas in tropical locations and for sporting events.

Spectators pack far more punch than sneakers/trainers.

Today, spectators are the perfect shoes for casual Fridays, weekends, outdoor parties and weddings- but certainly not funerals…..er, perhaps the “one year” celebration with its emphasis on black and white will be ok.

The trick is to keep the rest of the outfit simple since the shoes are far more noticeable than other dress shoes.

Beige, tan, brown, cream or olive chinos or linen pants are the first line; second line are white or navy pants; do stay away from pinstripes to avoid the gangster look.

The socks should be kept simple too; “happy socks” will not do.

Who says art is only for gallery walls and museums?

Some have always known better, and perhaps we all should, thus making the world more cheerful, classy and fun filled.

So we must never pass up an opportunity to remind ourselves of the Golden Age of Style……and that includes the ladies.

Have an artsy and fun weekend!
