Several weeks ago, my great friend and Achimota classmate, Olu Odunton remarked that I always seem rudderless whenever my roommate is away.
Perhaps we should take Olu’s observation seriously; he has known me for over fifty years.
Well, my roommate returned home safely yesterday after a business trip abroad.
So now for me, there certainly is at least one thoroughly knowledgeable, effortlessly charming, classically elegant patron of true style and discreet luxury within the country……an aesthete who has my back; someone who combines the creative with the commercial in a lucrative samba dance.
It’s all good.
It also means that the resolute champion of natural hair haute couture – the originator- not the duplicator, is back in Accra.
How many modern Africans are experts at the ancient art of the Senegalese twist complete with millet seeds decorating the hair ends?
How many are internationally acclaimed Master Locticians; experts at dreadlocks and have lobbied successfully to get New York State to award a State Licence for the natural care of African hair thus paving the way for other states to follow?
How many were trained by the titan, Ademola Mandela – the Master Barber, and were immediately appointed as one of his founding expert stylists at the legendary Kinnaps atelier in Brooklyn?
How many can give classy, badass, dope natural hair cuts that lift the spirit and push the aesthetic envelope?
When civil wars raged in and ravaged West Africa, how many voluntarily spent months in the refugee camps in order to share their skill with the displaced women so as to empower them economically and emotionally?
How many combine all of this with connoisseurship and unflinching support of the finest contemporary African art?
