HASSAN EL GLAOUI PASSES ON.

By Nii B. Andrews.

Hassan El Glaoui, one of the most distinguished pioneers of contemporary art in Morocco and Africa, has passed on at the age of 94 years.

His passing was reported by his family to have occurred on Thursday June 21.

El Glaoui was born in Marrakech and achieved international recognition and fame for his paintings.

He was formally trained in France at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

His first solo exhibition was in 1950, in Paris; another followed in New York in 1952.

He was a prolific painter who created a formidable portfolio that recorded the cultural essence of his homeland with a particular emphasis on the equestrian arts and lifestyle.

El Glaoui considered his art as a “living mirror of the past and the traditions which are still the essence of the Moroccan spirit”.

He explained further, “My love of my country has been the defining spirit of my painting.

I have recorded our ancestral roots, the flowers in the Valley of the Kasbah and the red Cherifian palaces, the royal corteges with their long lines of white burnouses and the mounted cavalry and their horses,”

Hassan El Glaoui has left us an impressive artistic legacy.

His youngest daughter, Touria El Glaoui is the founding director of the prestigious 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair.

  1. Truly, the world and Morocco in particular has lost a great and sensitive human being. Fortunately he has left his own legacy. RIP.
