MY NAME IS YAKUBU.

By Ken Nii Saki Sackey.

My name is Yakubu,
Poised sharp boy of a pure African brew,
Not seeing all the limitations and setbacks which you claim you do,
I am built on the blocks of my dreams I envision far beyond the scope of my reality
My name, is Yakubu.

My sights are set beyond the boundaries of my feet
My mind, wanders beyond the dryness of the savannah
My heart, beats pulses of greatness that they say I cannot afford but only dream of
My, name, is Yakubu.

My feet follow cattle to graze in my hustle,
My lips curve in a whistle among the thorns and thistle and yet my hope lies beyond this epistle
My name is Yakubu.

The wealth of my dreams is limited by poverty,
The song of my hopes is distuned by incapacity.
I live in a place where free dreaming is the only currency I can afford because its reality is too costly manifest
My name, is Yakubu.

And my soul sighs as I wave to school children by the road sides,
In colorful uniforms with bow ties
I’m so tired so rest my thoughts under the shade of the tree as the cattle graze by the roadside
My name, is Yakubu.

Many people wonder, and in their minds they ponder,
Why the bitter battle has not sent me into a predicted scuttle.
They toss and they turn,
Yet they do not comprehend.
Why I still remain firm like a militarized intern.
Because my spirit refuses to cope with reality and leans itself to hope for a better tomorrow.

I remain unbowed because my passion has taken a vow that my destiny will not remain with grazing cows.
I forge ahead with a mission
To bank all dreams in a vision,
And keep going till it comes into fruition,
To walk and give myself the permission,
To have my name etched in gold,
As he who rose through it all.

My name is Yakubu,

Strife,

The seed that was plunged into the ground

And poised, grew.

My name is a dream, a resolution, a force,

To permeate through every trial.

My name is a voice,

That calls out from the bellows of the deep.

I am potential, calling out to you.

Given so I can give.

Filled so I can fill.

Fortified so I can fortify.

My name, is Yakubu,
And tomorrow,
Is mine.
