HOPES AND DREAMS: Kwadwo Ani (born 1966) acrylic on canvas, 1998; 100x106cm. Signed and dated lower left corner. Provenance- Private Collection, purchased from the artist in Accra.
Ani is an alumnus of the Ghanatta College of Art and the Ankle College of Art in Ghana. His work has been exhibited in many African countries, Japan, Europe and the Americas.
Ani always plays with colors and exaggerates gestures and facial expressions in his characters.
In this painting, Ani guides our thoughts to the teeming numbers of unemployed youth in Ghana and beyond. Will their hopes and dreams be fulfilled or shall we all reap the whirlwind?
Any one of us can see a reflection of our shortcomings in his paintings but his style keeps us refreshed and perpetually amused.
