“Asking questions and disclosing the answers, or lack of them, is the fundamental responsibility, and contribution, of journalists to their communities.
…….international norms (have)been arrogantly abused in this dreadful episode.”
“Harm has been done, not just to one man, not just to journalism, but to the notion of all countries’ missions abroad as places where their own citizens can seek aid and where foreigners, especially intending visitors to the country, may be welcomed, confer, and safely leave.
“……..I write this because my role is to represent readers’ interests.
History teaches that one of the wreckers of democratic health is the gradual cowing and silencing of journalists.”
“In my career I’ve seen it happen in isolated ways.
It is happening more widely now, at what feels like a quickening pace.
Journalists will resist, but they will need your support, readers.
In speaking up for journalism, despite its many imperfections, you will be speaking up for yourself and for anyone who believes in freedom under law.”
PAUL CHADWICK.
I just enjoy this blog. The posts are great.
Nice piece.
Harm has really been done to journalism ; but it continues to be done to the rest of us who are violated/killed continually but have no geo- political clout. Everyone has the right to “no harm” not only journalists….Let’s make the world a safe place for everyone.
Journalism used to be a respected profession, in my view. Not anymore when so called journalists replace hard news with opinion pieces and invite people not to know the difference.. The murder of any person should be vehemently abhorred. But saving journalism must be the duty of journalists. Just like in medicine, the field of journalism must not tolerate malpractice. The latter is what is being done by some effete journalists of today.
Great quotation. The GJA remains mute.
