JOBURG ART FAIR RETURNS.

By Nii B. Andrews.

The 15th edition of Africa’s longest running contemporary art fair (formal name FNB ART JOBURG) returns to the Sandton Convention Center today; it will end on September 4th.

It is the first in person edition since 2019.

This edition will feature six separate curated sections: HUB, gallery LAB, MAX, ORG, AUX and ETC.

The chosen format will ensure that visitors to the fair, “…not only witness the best in contemporary African art, but to engage with the people behind it through our dynamic talks programme,” said FNB Art Joburg managing director Mandla Sibeko.

The central section of the fair will comprise the HUB where the very best in CAA will be presented with an emphasis on quality rather than quantity.

The ORG section will feature Johannesburg’s influential and famous art institutions: museums, universities, or private institutions and it will seek new forms of inclusive engagement with the public.

Large and mega scale works including installations will comprise the MAX section.

Print and publishing houses feature in the ETC section.

An extensive program of seminars, plenary talks and lectures make up the AUX component.

Mandla Sibeko again explained: “We hope that people see how rich the continent is with talent and that their support of the art industry continues throughout the year.

We’re not just a fair where you look at art.

We are a broad way of engaging with Johannesburg through its creativity.

What we’re trying to do is make sure that our fair becomes the place where people go to for the best African content”.

The following galleries will feature prominently at the fair; Afriart Gallery, blank projects, Eclectica Contemporary, Everard Read, First Floor Gallery Harare, Gallery MOMO, Goodman Gallery, Guns & Rain, Kalashnikovv, SMAC Gallery, Stevenson, and WHATIFTHEWORLD.
