MARIO MACILAU AT CENTER POMPIDOU

“Growing in Darkness”

It is heartwarming to hear that the Center Pompidou has very recently acquired ten items from Mario Macilau’s series of photographs, “Growing in Darkness”.

THE SHOWER: Mario Macilau.

The acquisition is for the Pompidou’s national collection and this is certainly a tremendous shot in the arm for the artist.

Macilau is the Mozambican photographer who has chronicled the stark socioeconomic conditions of marginalised groups in several urban areas of Maputo and beyond.

His photographs seen here have a haunting beauty and an arresting power.

Their ambivalence invites us to continue contemplating, questioning and recalibrating the trajectory of Africa’s development.

Macilau is represented by Ed Cross Fine Art Limited, now located at Somerset House in central London.

We congratulate Macilau on his latest achievement.
