The photo – Earthrise, shows Earth and part of the Moon’s surface taken from lunar orbit during the Apollo 8 mission, fifty years ago.
This was the first time that the finite and fragile form of our planet could be seen by humankind: a small planet, insignificant in size compared to the galaxy, still less the universe…..but the only home that we know gives us life and can sustain us; our “blue refuge in the vast monochrome void”.
Nature photographer Galen Rowell declared it “the most influential environmental photograph ever taken”.
