ANOTHER ENWONWU GEM UNEARTHED.

By Nii B. Andrews.

Texas is the latest location where another important Ben Enwonwu painting has been fortuitously discovered as reported by Quartz Africa.

This latest painting entitled CHRISTINE was painted in 1971 as a commissioned portrait.

The subject was then thirty something year old West Indian born hair stylist, Christine Elizabeth Davis.

Her husband had had Enwonwu execute the painting as a birthday present for his wife when they lived in Lagos; they had moved there from Ghana.

Years later, the couple returned to the US with the painting.

Unfortunately, when Christine Davis passed, the painting remained in the family home largely forgotten and its pedigree unrecognized up until recently.

A family member decided to Google the signed name on the portrait….and hit pay dirt.

The newly discovered painting by the celebrated artist will be auctioned at Sotheby’s London  this October; its estimated value is USD 200K.

CHRISTINE was painted before the enigmatic Enwonwu painting TUTU which sold in 2018 for USD 1.6M.

TUTU had been hanging unrecognized in a modest London apartment for years up until 2017.

  1. Amazing….. Some small private matter has reached such a high price. Art is everywhere, art is everything.

  2. Isn’t it amazing how we over look valuable things sometimes sitting right under our eyes?
