DISCOVERING PHOTOGRAPHY

By Nii B. Andrews

“I have discovered photography.

Now I can kill myself.

I have nothing else to learn”

                                                    PABLO PICASSO

All over Africa, the perspective of people towards photography as art is slowly evolving.

For most collectors, they would much more readily purchase a painting; photographs are new to them.

A lot more education is needed before photographs can enter the collector’s mainstream.

African photography can be affordable, is probably undervalued, but can be very exclusive.

There are many new talents and a host of young photographers; and among young collectors, interest appears to be steadily increasing.

As both groups develop their collective aesthetic vibe we can remain optimistic about the continuing and increasing importance of photography within contemporary African art.
